Timeline: 1908-1918
Prosperity at home....business boomed as the U.S. became one of the world's industrial powers....President Wilson led the U.S. into a war "to make the world safe for democracy." World War I united an industry to meet the worldwide demand for American food....Some small food chains and independents began to change over to "cash and carry," a movement that would blossom in the 1930s.
Young Association Heads World War I Mobilization
With food production severely hampered by war, the U.S. food supply chain geared up for the first time to feed its own population and "The Yanks" serving in trenches "Over There," and to assist in feeding allied troops and populations.
William Sweet, President of Rumford Chemical Works was asked by President Wilson to set up a War Council to work closely with the Federal Food Administration in the war effort. F.H. Millard (Diamond Crystal Salt) was sent to Washington to represent GMA's War Council to the U.S. President.
From 1917 to 1918, American food suppliers were able to approximately triple the normal production levels of breadstuffs, meat and sugar.
National Association Flexes Legislative Muscle
GMA has urged uniformity since the very beginning, starting by working on uniform food and drug laws throughout the states. Massachusetts adopted a "law recommended by GMA" in 1917. GMA also worked in this period for uniform insecticide/fungicide and uniform weight/measures laws.
