Biography
Mary Sophos is senior vice president of government affairs and chief government affairs officer for the Grocery Manufacturers Association. She is responsible for the development and implementation of government affairs public policy goals at the state, federal and international levels. Sophos addresses federal and state legislative and regulatory policy governing foods and consumer products. She works on issues such as allergens, nutrition, food standards and warnings, labeling, taxes, recycling, environmental/chemical standards and warnings, water, privacy, counterfeiting, transportation, worker safety, and biotechnology.
Before joining GMA, Sophos served as assistant secretary of legislative affairs and deputy assistant secretary for legislative affairs for the U.S. Treasury. Sophos also was assistant minority counsel to the House Ways and Means Committee, budget associate staff, and legislative director to Rep. Tom Loeffler as well as legislative assistant to the director of the Office of Management and Budget.
Sophos received a Bachelor of Science degree in political science from Pitzer College, the Claremont Colleges.
