Priority Programs
GMA continues to represent its members on many issues, including the
following priority programs (listed in alphabetical order):
» Acrylamide
Acrylamide is formed in food when naturally occurring nutrients - sugar and amino acids - are heated during
traditional cooking methods such as baking, frying and toasting. In fact, acrylamide is widespread and is
found in foods representing approximately 40 percent of calories consumed by the average American.
Acrylamide in foods occurs whether the food is prepared at home, in a restaurant or in a food processing plant.
» Biofuels
GMA/FPA supports the goal of reducing reliance on fossil fuels and believes that biofuels can play an important role.
GMA/FPA supports the development of sustainable and energy efficient fuel alternatives in a market-based environment.
We also support policies that ensure that the country can increase biofuels production without impacting the food industry's
ability to continue to provide reliable and affordable food to the nation and other markets.
» Biotechnology
Modern biotechnology provides farmers and food producers with the latest
tools in the search for better, more healthful foods, as well as foods that
are resistant to certain pests and tolerant to environmental stresses such
as drought. GMA's position papers and useful resources can be found here.
» Bioterrorism
The safety of the nation’s food supply has always been the highest priority of our industry.
GMA and its member companies share the public’s increased concern over food security. Since
the September 11 attacks the industry has been reexamining every aspect of the food security
system, from raw materials to product distribution, in order to ensure that it is as strong as possible.
» Codex Alimentarius
The Codex Alimentarius Commission is now the food safety standards
body used as a reference in settling global trade disputes involving food in
the World Trade Organization. Codex standards are now the benchmarks
against which national food measures and regulations are evaluated.
» Commodity Programs
Reform of U.S. agriculture commodity programs is often a subject of
debate. Click here for information on commodity programs that affect
GMA members.
» Dietary Guidelines
GMA and its members believe it is important for Americans to understand that to
be healthy they must eat a nutritionally-balanced diet, and they must be physically
active and moderate their food intake to match level of physical activity.
This page provides more information about GMA’s position on revision of the
Dietary Guidelines and the Food Guide Pyramid.
» Electronic Commerce
The technology revolution continues to change the way food
manufacturers do business. GMA believes that our industry must respect
the privacy concerns of consumers and have a responsibility to adopt and
implement policies that address those concerns. Find out how electronic
commerce could be impacted by governments.
» Food Allergy
Food allergies affect an estimated six to seven million persons in the United
States. Some of these sensitized consumers can develop serious or life-threatening
allergic reactions if exposed to the allergenic proteins. The food industry
has taken numerous steps over the past several years to address the needs of
food allergic consumers, including improving labeling standards and implementing
changes to manufacturing processes to reduce the potential for cross contact
with major food allergens.
» Food & Beverage Product Advertising
GMA members are committed to adhere to principles of responsible consumer communication,
and have long subjected their advertising to rigorous internal review. Responding to the
public interest in transparency of advertising standards, GMA has drawn upon the experience
of its members, and is publishing the core principles that we believe should guide the
development, execution, placement and monitoring of food and beverage advertisements.
GMA is offering these principles as a recommendation to all companies that advertise
food and beverage products.
» Food & Consumer Product Security
The safety of the nation’s food supply has always been the highest priority
of our industry. GMA and its member companies share the public’s increased
concern over food security. Since the September 11 attacks the industry
has been reexamining every aspect of the food security system, from raw
materials to product distribution, in order to ensure that it is as strong
as possible.
» Food Safety
The United States enjoys the safest, most abundant food supply in the
world. Much of the success is due to the highly effective partnership
between government and the industry. Click here to find out what GMA is
doing to ensure the safety of the U.S. food supply and learn more about
the food industry's work on food safety.

criminal activities, and questions about suspicious terrorist or criminal activity that others may

» Functional Foods/Health Claims
America's aging baby boomers don't just want to live longer; they want to
live better. And surveys have shown consumers are looking to their diet to
help take control of their health. As a result, there is great potential for
growth in the food industry's new frontier: functional foods. Click here
to learn more about this issue.
» International Trade
GMA is committed to reducing trade barriers and increasing market access
for processed food products globally. Processed food and beverage trade
is increasing twice as fast as trade in primary commodities, and is
expected to account for nearly 75 percent of global agrifood trade by 2002.
